The developers behind the popular Warframe license have revealed their upcoming game, Soulframe.
We say “revealed”, but it’s not really a big surprise. Indeed, the Digital Extremes studio had let the cat out of the bag a couple of months ago by filing a trademark with the name of…Soulframe. Until now, we didn’t know anything about the game, but the developers finally came out of the shadows at Tennocon 2022 with a first trailer and some more details.
A successor to warframe? not really
First of all, you have to know that this famous trailer does not show any gameplay, it is only a cinematic introducing the world of the software. Thus, we can see that the latter is somewhat removed from the science fiction universe of Warframe. Here, place to fantasy, magic and swords. But then, why this change of frame? That’s the question Geoff Crookes, the game’s creative director, answered:
We’re really looking to go back to our favorite childhood stories and draw inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds we grew up loving. Our team is really interested in this idea of nature colliding with humanity and we’re going to explore a lot of these themes through our own prism, while playing with the ideas of recovery and exploration.
With that said, Soulframe will take the form of a free-to-play MMORPG. Again, while the comparison to Warframe seems obvious, the gameplay itself will not be quite the same. For good reason, the nervous ranged battles will be less present in this new title to leave room for slower hand-to-hand combat.
For the moment, there is no release date to declare and it may last for a while. So we’ll have to be patient.
