After winning a prestigious award from GOTY in New York, Psychonauts 2 is on the rise. Its creator, Tim Schafer, claims to have had proposals to adapt his games to the screen.
The wise Tim Schafer talked. The man responsible in part for the greatest period of video games in the 90s with LucasArts has always had a particular vision of the industry. And when IGN ask him what he thinks of a film adaptation of his creations, the answer is simple.
We are often approached by people who say: “hey, could we adapt this into a film?”. But you know it’s usually just a distraction. I think games are what I really care about, what I like to do and what I think is interesting. The idea comes up from time to time, but it never turns into anything. I’ve had a lot of free lunches in Hollywood!
A distraction therefore, for one of the fathers of point & click, and director of the Double Fine studio. Franchise creator Psychonauts, the man has obviously already been approached to adapt this title on the big screen.
We could do tons of stuff with Psychonauts. But, you know, games are cooler than movies and TV, so we’ve already reached the top..
The interview also allows us to take stock of the idea of Duncan Jones, director of the film. Warcraft, who repeatedly challenged the creator of Full Throttle, with a script already written.
He wrote a script that was good, man, I read it all! […] Yes, you could clearly tell that he had really played the game and knew what it was all about. So yeah, it was exciting, I mean it would be fun to work with Duncan. But you know, Los Angeles and Hollywood is above all a big whirlwind of lunches.
A nice and elegant way to also sweep this project out of hand and to ensure that what interests him is the video game and nothing else. Note that the interview took place following the New York Game Awards 2022, where Psychonauts 2 received Game of the Year.
