Assessment of the Casinò di Campione d’Italia one year after its reopening
Campione d’Italia is a small municipality of less than 2,000 inhabitants that is located on the shores of Lake Lugano. It has the particularity of being an Italian enclave in Swiss territory. Indeed, it officially belongs to the province of Como in Lombardy.
About a year ago, its casino, which was once one of the most important in Europe, resumed its activities after its bankruptcy.
This is an ideal opportunity to take stock of the good results of the return of the Casinò di Campione d’Italia.
Gross gaming revenue 12% higher than expected
The Casinò di Campione d’Italia was opened in 1917. In 2007 it moved to a new building to become one of the most important establishments of its kind on the European continent. Nevertheless, it has had to face competition from online casinos and from new gaming complexes that have opened in nearby cities.
This eventually caused its bankruptcy. So on July 27, 2018, it was forced to close its doors. 500 people lost their jobs, which was quite a blow to the entire city that derived most of its income from this establishment.
As a result, the tourist office and the kindergarten, for example, also had to close, as did a number of stores.
Fortunately, the situation in the city has now improved. The Casinò di Campione d’Italia was able to reopen on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, with excellent results, even better than expected. They are even better than expected. Originally, the establishment was aiming for a gross gaming revenue of 40 million euros for its first 12 months.
In the end, this figure was exceeded by 12%. Thus, the debt reduction agreed with the bankruptcy office in Como is progressing as planned.
Some expansion projects under study at the Casinò di Campione d’Italia
In order to reopen its doors, the Casinò di Campione d’Italia was forced to scale back its ambitions. In the past, it employed almost 500 people, but now it employs only 174. In addition, salaries have been reduced to an average of €3,600 per month. In comparison, during the golden age, salaries were about double that amount.
In addition, many services, such as cleaning and restaurant management, were outsourced in order to concentrate on the main activity, i.e. the operation of the games.
Thanks to its excellent results, the Casinò di Campione d’Italia is already thinking about expansion projects. At the moment, only two floors are used for games. The third floor should be opened in the future. An additional restaurant, accessible without passing through the gaming room, could also be created to take full advantage of the terraces which offer a magnificent panorama of Lake Lugano.
Finally, the auditorium should soon have a much busier schedule.
