Casino de Montréal union votes for 5-day strike
There may soon be a strike at the Casino de Montréal in the Canadian province of Quebec. More than 1,000 employees of the gaming complex have issued a 5-day strike mandate, to be used whenever they see fit.
Of course, for many analysts, the opportune moment could well be the weekend of the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
After all, this competition is one of the major tourist events for the city of Montreal.
Strike mandate voted by 91% of union members
In a press release issued a few days ago, the union affiliated to the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (or CSN) representing Casino de Montréal employees has just made it known that 91% of its members were in favor of a 5-day strike.
In fact, the text itself refers to the sporting competition, writing: “A l’approche du Grand Prix de Montréal”.
The latter will take place between Friday June 16 and Sunday June 18, 2023 on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. It is located on Île Notre-Dame, a man-made island in Montreal that is also home to the games complex.
For an increase equivalent to the rise in the cost of living plus 1 Canadian dollar per hour
Since June 2022, the union has been in talks with the Loto-Québec group, which operates the Casino de Montréal. The union is seeking a wage increase equivalent to the rise in the cost of living, plus just 1 Canadian dollar an hour, in order to protect employees’ purchasing power while improving staff retention.
The employees affected by this strike work in customer care, catering or security.
The Loto-Québec group was quick to react to the 5-day strike mandate. In a similar press release, it stated that it had already proposed 2 full and generous monetary offers to employees who could meet the major challenges of the economic context and staff retention.
Similar demands were also heard at the Casino de Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, where a strike mandate was also issued.
For the moment, it remains to be seen what will be decided at the Charlevoix and Mont-Tremblant casinos. Indeed, votes are to be organized by the unions in the next few days.
An overview of the Casino de Montréal
Opened on October 9, 1993, the Casino de Montréal is the largest complex of its kind in Quebec, and one of the largest in Canada. Its gaming hall extends over several floors.
Open every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and until 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, it features a wide range of slot machines.
There are also traditional gaming tables for baccarat, blackjack, poker, roulette and battle. Finally, there’s an area dedicated to electronic games, known as the Zone.
