Pachter: Apple will be a serious games company, game quality won’t be as good as Nintendo’s

Submitted by Stephen Ebert on March 1, 2010 – 9:00 amOne Comment

Speaking about competition between the big consoles well known analyst Michael Pachter believes Apple will be a serious games company. But don’t get too excited about an Apple games console – Pachter reckons the quality of its games won’t be as good as those from Nintendo.

Pachter made the prediction during the latest episode of Pach Attack, where he said Apple is “stumbling into the games business by accident” and “discovered that it’s a pretty cool place to be,” once the company saw the success of games on the iPhone.

On competing with the ‘Big Three’ he suggested that if Apple were to manufacture a console its game quality won’t be as good as that from Nintendo, and that Apple would have to heavily rely on third-party titles.

“I think Apple’s going to be a serious gaming company,” he said. “The difference between Apple and Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft is, Apple is not known for internal software development. So I don’t think you’re going to get an Apple Games Group like you have Microsoft Games Studios making games you’re certainly never going to approach the quality of games you get out of Nintendo.”

The success of the Apple Store has already proven that games can thrive on an Apple platform. But given the growing importance of first party PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii games at a time when more franchises are going multi-platform could a reliance on third party titles stop a potential Apple console breaking through?

Let us know your thoughts and predictions.

Bit surprised at the comment that Apple are not known for internal software development. Where does Mac and iPhone OS, iWork, iLife, Safari, iTunes, Aperture, Logic, Final Cut Studio and also the Filemaker brand come from?
